Spec Dekton or porcelain over quartz any time the job involves direct sun, outdoor kitchens, high heat near cooktops, or large-format slabs for walls and floors. Quartz still wins for most interior countertops on price and consistency, but it has real limits in UV exposure and heat tolerance that Dekton and porcelain don't share. Knowing which limit you're up against is the whole decision.
Dekton vs quartz: what's actually different
Quartz is roughly 90-93% ground quartz mixed with polyester resin. That resin is what makes quartz easy to fabricate and consistent in color, but it's also what breaks down under UV light and can scorch near sustained heat. Dekton, made by Cosentino, is a sintered material, no resin at all. It's compressed under heat and pressure similar to how natural stone forms, just compressed into hours instead of millennia. Porcelain slabs (Neolith, Lapitec, and porcelain lines from various producers) are made the same general way. Neither one has a resin binder to worry about.
That difference in composition is why Dekton and porcelain show up on spec sheets for outdoor kitchens, fireplace surrounds, and anywhere direct sun hits the surface for years. Quartz will fade or yellow under sustained UV. Dekton and porcelain won't.
When does heat rule out quartz?
Quartz can discolor or crack if a hot pan sits directly on it, especially near a cooktop where residual heat builds up over repeated use. Manufacturers rate quartz for brief heat contact, not sustained exposure. Dekton and porcelain are fired at extreme temperatures during production, so a pan straight off the burner isn't a real threat to either one. For clients who cook a lot and don't reach for a trivet, that's a legitimate reason to steer them toward Dekton, especially on a section of countertop right next to the range.
Is porcelain more durable than quartz?
Porcelain and Dekton resist scratching and etching better than quartz in most side-by-side comparisons, but quartz still has an edge in impact resistance on thinner sections. Porcelain slabs are dense and hard, which makes them tough to scratch with a knife or key, but that same hardness makes them more prone to chipping at an unsupported edge if something heavy is dropped square on a corner. Quartz has a bit more give. For an island edge that's going to take daily abuse from bar stools and dropped pans, that's worth mentioning to a client during the material walkthrough.
Staining is where porcelain and Dekton pull ahead outright. Both are close to non-porous, so wine, oil, and acidic foods sit on the surface instead of soaking in. Quartz resists staining well too, but it's not quite in the same category.
Large-format porcelain for walls, floors, and shower surrounds
Porcelain's biggest advantage over quartz isn't the countertop, it's everything around it. Porcelain slabs come in large formats, often 5x10 feet or bigger, and can be book-matched across a shower wall or run floor-to-ceiling behind a range without a seam in the middle of the pattern. Quartz slabs run in similar sizes but the material reads differently in vertical, large-scale applications. This is where showrooms should be steering clients who want a dramatic, marble-look wall without the maintenance of actual marble. Porcelain in a calacatta or statuario visual gives that look with a surface that shrugs off etching from bathroom cleaners.
When quartz is still the better spec
Quartz wins on price, fabrication speed, and color consistency for standard interior kitchens with no direct sun or heavy heat exposure. Most fabricators can template, cut, and install quartz faster than sintered surfaces, and the tooling is more widely available, which usually means a shorter lead time for the client. If the job is a straightforward interior kitchen remodel with a gas range and normal use, quartz remains the practical default. Save Dekton and porcelain for the jobs where sun, heat, or a large-format wall application actually calls for it, rather than upselling every client into a sintered surface out of habit.
The right call usually comes down to where the slab lives and how it'll get used, not which material sounds more premium on a spec sheet. A showroom that can explain that difference clearly earns more trust than one that just pushes the newest option in the display.
